What Questions Will a Funeral Celebrant Ask the Family?

When a loved one dies, many families worry that meeting with a funeral celebrant will feel formal or overwhelming.

In reality, the conversation is usually much more relaxed than people expect.

One of the most important parts of my role as a funeral celebrant is getting to know the person who has died. Every life is unique, and the more I learn about someone, the more personal and meaningful their funeral ceremony can be.

Getting to Know the Person Behind the Name

Many of the questions I ask are designed to help build a picture of the person’s life.

I may ask:

  • What were they like as a person?
  • What did family and friends love about them?
  • What were their hobbies and interests?
  • What did they do for work?
  • What made them laugh?
  • What achievements were they most proud of?

Often, these questions lead to stories, memories and moments that families haven’t thought about for years.

Understanding Family Relationships

Every family is different.

I may ask about:

  • Their partner or spouse
  • Children and grandchildren
  • Brothers and sisters
  • Close friends
  • Important people in their life

Understanding these relationships helps me tell their story in a way that feels authentic and respectful.

Finding the Personal Details

Sometimes it is the little details that make a ceremony truly special.

I might ask:

  • What music did they enjoy?
  • Did they have favourite sayings?
  • Were there places that meant a lot to them?
  • What will people remember most about them?

These details help create a ceremony that reflects the person rather than simply listing facts and dates.

There Are No Right or Wrong Answers

One thing I always reassure families about is that there is no test to pass.

You do not need to have all the answers.

Some families arrive with pages of notes and photographs. Others simply want to sit and talk.

My role is to guide the conversation, listen carefully and gather the information needed to create a ceremony that feels personal and meaningful.

Telling Their Story

The questions I ask are not just about gathering information. They help me understand the person behind the name and create a ceremony that celebrates their life, their personality and the memories they leave behind.

For many families, sharing those memories can be a comforting part of the funeral process itself.
